Exhibition Hypogeum

For the second edition of ART/PLATTE we create a living, evolving exhibition curated by Thomias Radin, presented as an official and certified part of Berlin Art Week.

With Hypogeum, Thomias Radin enters a new chapter in his artistic curatorial practice, continuing his interest in the archaeology of human psychology. The exhibition explores the mind as a place of constant movement: between reality and imagination, different identities, memories, impulses and the unconscious.

The title refers to the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum in Malta, a prehistoric underground complex carved into the rock and used as a burial site between 4000 and 2500 BC. Its interconnected chambers and hidden depths become a curatorial blueprint for the exhibition: not a reconstruction of the archaeological site, but a metaphor for the mind as an interior landscape.

PLATTE basement becomes a contemporary counterpart to the ancient underground chambers of Malta. One is an archaeological site shaped by a prehistoric civilization; the other is a contemporary cultural space in the centre of Berlin. Between them, thousands of years separate the two, yet both invite a movement away from the surface and into another kind of interior.

The exhibition brings together works that can appear radically different from one another in form, colour, movement and atmosphere. This contrast is intentional. It reflects the mind’s ability to move rapidly from one thought, emotion or perception to another, often holding contradictory states at the same time.

Rather than seeking coherence through a single aesthetic language, Hypogeum embraces this multiplicity. Each work becomes a different room within the same mental landscape: a space for instinct, memory, desire, fear, imagination or contemplation.
